Short answer: probably not just because you used an app. We found no US retailer that publicly documents a lower tire price for ordering in its app instead of on its website. The apps save you time. They make booking easier and let you check in or track your service, as with Discount Tire. Your cost mostly comes down to three things: the tire price, how the retailer charges for installation, and whether you need to pay for a membership. The catch is that most retailers only show the full installed price after you enter your ZIP code or vehicle. You can't see an exact national price ahead of time.

How ordering winter tires online with installation works

You pick winter tires that fit your vehicle online or in an app, pay (or reserve them), and send them to a shop that mounts them. Here's how that usually goes in the US:

  • Find your tire: You enter your vehicle, tire size or license plate. Costco's tire site accepts all three and matches the plate to your state's public vehicle records.
  • Pick an installer: This might be the retailer's own shop (Discount Tire, Walmart Auto Care, Costco Tire Center), a partner shop (Tire Rack's network, Amazon's Ship-to-Store partners), or a mobile installer who comes to you.
  • Book a time: Depending on the retailer, you book in its app, on its website or by phone.
  • Get the tires mounted: Installation usually covers mounting, balancing and valve stems. What else is included, and what costs extra, depends on the retailer.

A note on the law (US federal): Tire sales are covered by federal tire registration rules, which help manufacturers contact you if there's a recall. Under 49 CFR 574.8, an independent dealer can give you a paper registration form that already has your tire identification numbers on it, or send your details in electronically if the manufacturer allows it. Electronic registration for independent dealers has been voluntary since a 2008 final rule. Our research didn't turn up any newer changes, but check the current eCFR text if this matters to you. Hang on to whatever registration paperwork you get with your winter tires.

  • Research date and market: September 29, 2026, United States only.
  • Criteria: How installation is priced, any membership or subscription cost, whether you can buy and book in the app, what platforms the app runs on, what extras are included (rotation, balancing, road hazard coverage), and important restrictions.
  • Sources: Official retailer pages and help articles, official App Store and Google Play listings, the eCFR, and reputable US consumer publications. When a retailer's own page wouldn't load or didn't list a price, we used secondary sources and say so.
  • What this is not: This is a desk comparison. We didn't install or test any of these apps and we didn't place orders. Local prices, promotions and stock change every day.
  • Excluded: Independent local shops without a national app, and regional chains we couldn't check nationwide. We also looked at Tire Rack's app, Tire Rack Garage. Its developer page on the App Store exists, but the app is a tire-care tracker, not a store, and its US listing returned an error when we checked. So we compare Tire Rack only as a website.

The options in detail

Discount Tire app

Documented features: The official app is free. It lets you shop for tires, book appointments, find stores, check in with "Get in Line," and follow your vehicle's status. It needs iOS 17.2 or later. Discount Tire says you get a 30% shorter average wait when you buy and book online. Its Out the Door price includes installation plus free lifetime rotation and balancing, and there's a disposal fee if you leave your old tires with them. Discount Tire also offers winter tire changeovers and installs studs at some stores in areas where studded tires are legal.

Watch out: A separate App Store app called "Discount Tire & Automotive Inc" says it has no connection to the Arizona-based chain. On Android, AppBrain reports that the app was pulled from Google Play in May 2025, but a Play Store page for it still exists. Check the store yourself before you count on it.

  • Rated 2.3/5 from 293 ratings on the US App Store. Reviewers say it feels like a wrapper around the website, the scheduling isn't reliable and it has bugs

  • Optional add-ons, like Certificates for Repair, Refund or Replacement, can raise the total

Good fit for: People who live near a Discount Tire (also called America's Tire in some areas) and want as few steps as possible. Not a good fit if: You don't have a store nearby or you'd rather not rely on a low-rated app. The website does the same job.

Walmart app

Documented features: The Walmart app is free, needs iOS 16 or later, and has a 4.8/5 rating. Its App Store description doesn't mention auto care. Guides say you can book auto services in the app under Services → Auto Services, and that at checkout you pick either pickup only or tires with installation (Tire Advise). One source disagrees: in January 2026, Clark.com said you need to call the store to book installation for tires shipped there. Walmart's own price pages were behind a bot check when we looked. Secondary sources that cite Walmart's price list give $18 per tire for the installation package, which covers mounting, a valve stem service pack, and lifetime balancing and rotation on tires bought at Walmart.

Walmart+ (US): It costs $98 a year or $12.95 a month. Members get free flat repair and a free road hazard warranty on tires bought and installed at Walmart. The warranty isn't available in New York, and you need an active membership when you buy and when the tires are installed.

Good fit for: People who shop at Walmart anyway, especially current Walmart+ members. Not a good fit if: You want a narrow specialty winter tire size that your local Auto Care Center can't get.

Costco Tire Center

Documented features: You buy tires on tires.costco.com, have them delivered to your warehouse for free, and book installation at CostcoTireAppointments.com. Costco's FAQ doesn't say the Costco app can book tire appointments. Orders take about 5–10 business days to arrive, and you then have 14 days to get them installed. Costco only installs tires bought from Costco. Current promotions say "Installation package is included." From September 21 to October 18, 2026, Costco lists $80 off a set of four Michelin tires and $60 off a set of four BFGoodrich tires.

  • Requires a membership ($65/yr for Gold Star, in the US)

Good fit for: People who already have a Costco membership and plan ahead. Not a good fit if: You're not a member and only need tires once, or you need them this week.

Tire Rack (website, no shopping app)

Documented features: Tire Rack, owned by Discount Tire since the 2021 acquisition, ships tires to a network of recommended installers. Under its Price Pledge, those installers must show an exact installation quote before you order. Clark.com puts the average at about $26 per tire. Tire Rack Mobile Installation is available in some ZIP codes.

Pros

  • Big selection of winter tires and exact installer pricing up front
  • Mobile installation at your home or work in some areas

Cons

  • No shopping app, so you'll use the website
  • Installation is a separate charge, which adds to the total

Good fit for: People who compare a lot or need a specific winter tire size. Not a good fit if: You want the cheapest possible installed total with nothing extra added.

Amazon Ship-to-Store

Documented features: At checkout, you can have tires shipped to a partner shop for installation. Reviews from August 2026 show installs done by Goodyear Auto Service and Monro. The 1-tire listing includes mounting, balancing, TPMS relearn and disposal. Installers only show up if your ZIP code is within 30 miles of a service center.

Pros

  • Easy if you already buy things in the Amazon app
  • Disposal and TPMS relearn are listed as included

Cons

  • Installation prices only appear once you enter your location
  • Some customer reviews describe mix-ups over appointments between Amazon and the shop

Good fit for: People who find a good tire deal on Amazon and live close to a partner shop. Not a good fit if: You live in a rural area or want one company handling everything.

Assumptions (US, one-time purchase, 12 months):

  • Four Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 tires at $150 each, the same price at every retailer so we can isolate the fees. TireGuide.org shows listings around $150 at Tire Rack and Costco in common sizes, but your size and price will be different.
  • Installation fees are the ones sourced above. Taxes, disposal fees and state tire fees aren't included.

What the math shows:

  • If you already have a Costco membership, you'd save $72 compared with Walmart and $104 compared with Tire Rack in this scenario.
  • If you'd be joining Costco just for tires, the $65 fee nearly cancels out the $72 installation difference. You'd come out only $7 ahead of Walmart.
  • Break-even: Joining Costco only pays off for tires if the installation you avoid costs more than $65, which works out to about $16.25 per tire for a set of four.
  • Our $150-per-tire figure is a big simplification. Costco may build installation into its tire prices, and a difference of $10 per tire in the tire price itself (worth $40 on a set) can wipe out these gaps. Compare installed totals for your exact size, not just the installation fees.

These numbers are an example, not a promise that you'll save anything.

Trends worth knowing

  • Discount Tire now covers both store and online buying. Owning Tire Rack gives it a store-based app and a large online shop with mobile installation.
  • Membership perks affect the real price. Walmart+ now bundles a free road hazard warranty with tire installation, and Costco's seasonal promotions for fall 2026 are running as we write.
  • Apps are mostly used to book, not to get a better price. Discount Tire advertises shorter waits, not lower prices, for buying and booking online.

Conclusion

You probably won't save money just by ordering winter tires in an app. None of the US retailers we researched documents a lower price for app orders. Apps help with booking, check-in and keeping everything in one place. Your savings depend on the tire price, whether installation is included or charged separately, and whether you already pay for a membership. In our hypothetical scenario, installation is included at Costco if you're already a member, Walmart's roughly $18-per-tire package is cheap if you're not, Discount Tire's quoted price includes installation, and Tire Rack gives you the widest selection with a separate installer fee. Compare the full installed total for your exact tire size before you pick.
